Brazilian Students Recognized For Their Art
September, 2005 [Aracuja & Macae, Brazil]
The excitement was evident in the artwork created by the students from 2 schools in Brazil. The artists were honored for their entries in the annual SEED Greeting Card Competition at awards ceremonies for the local winners.
The art competition happens only once a year, and for many of the students who participate, it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to win recognition and valuable prizes for their artistry.
Three students, Alan Félix da Mota, Lilian Mara da Silva Feitoza, and Katiúcia Maria da Jesus Reis, were guests of honor representing their school, Estadual Djenal Tavares Queiroz Government College, a SEED-sponsored school in the northern Brazilian town of Aracuja. This was the third year of participation since this school joined the SEED in 2003. Their work was on view for their parents, teachers and administrators, as well as visiting Schlumberger operations manager Lino Romero and personnel manager Josefina Perera, from the Schlumberger Oilfield Services office in Macae .

As hosts of the event, the Schlumberger managers were there to recognize Alan, Lílian and Katilúcia, whose work had been selected from more than 100 entries to represent Brazil’s northern SEED schools at the international art competition in Clamart, France.
For school director, Lindinalva Lima Santos, it was a great honor for her students to represent the state at a worldwide event. “This occasion reflects great work by my students with the help of SEED, with cooperation from the state government and support from the state education secretary. It is a great accomplishment that contributes to stronger self-esteem throughout our community and stimulates the expression of talent by students in our public schools.”
Works by three other Brazilian students, Evand de Souza Crespo, Gabriel de Souzo Basilio, and Lorrana dos Santos Freitas, were selected to represent Escola Municipal Jose Calil Filho located in the coastal city of Macae in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Their artwork illustrated the richness of their regional culture in drawings filled with joy and creativity. The beauty and importance of family, school and community life represented their inheritance and the legacy they will leave to the world.
During the award ceremony at the school, one 9 year-old artist nervously expressed his appreciation: "I would like to thank my school and the project SEED for the opportunity, I am very happy." Smiling and excited, he proudly left the stage with his prize.
