Algeria is celebrating the inauguration of two new secondary schools within the SEED program, Lycee Houari Boumedienne Wilaya Illizi and Lycée Chikh Amoud in In Amenas. The simultaneous inaugurations, both located in the southeastern province of Governorat Illizi, took place on May 11th, 2010. The schools are about 240 KM apart, so Schlumberger participants took a flight between the two places in order to attend both ceremonies. Schlumberger transformed classrooms at each school into new SEED labs and provided furnishings, computers, and a two-year Internet connectivity grant.

At the inauguration were students and teachers from both institutions; the directors of both schools, Mr. Brahim Natouri of the Lycée Houari Boumedienne and Mr. Hacene Benras of the Lycée Chikh Amoud; the Governor (Wali) of Illizi, Mr. Boualem Tifour; the Education Director of Illizi, Mr. Kaarouche Brahim; Schlumberger NAG GeoMarket Manager Mohamed Kermoud; and, several other Schlumberger managers and employee-volunteers, local officials, and community guests.

After getting acquainted with their new computer lab, students will learn to use the many educational offerings presented on the SEED Web site.

Spirits ran high at the ceremony. Speeches were made by the school principals and by the Wali of Illizi, who thanked Schlumberger for selecting the schools to participate in SEED, and by Mohamed Kermoud, who expressed his joy at being able to contribute to the schools, and his best wishes for the future of the students and the schools.

Colorful and delicious treats symbolized the joy and appreciation everyone felt!

The inauguration was made official by the signing of the SEED agreements and by the presentation of a memorial plaque to each school, after which gifts were given to all of the students. After some closing words, everyone attended a celebratory luncheon to memorialize the occasion.

Today there are six schools in Algeria. Plans to activate more schools and enact further SEED programs with our volunteers are in the works.
