Larisa Pastor and Maxim Panfilov with a young scientist as he explores the Hele-Shaw Cell |
July 2004 [Moscow]
by Elena Lebedeva
This year 810 young people, ranging from 12 to 27 years of age—students of Universities, schools and educational centers from 56 Russian towns and 42 regions—took part in the annual All-Russian Exhibition of Scientific and Technical Creative Work of Youth (NTTM) 2004.
The students presented 472 individual and team projects in the areas of mathematics, computer science, medicine, biology, ecology, earth science, astronomy and space, technosphere, machinery, technologies, architecture, construction and social sciences. The Expo was organized by the Moscow Municipal Government, Council of Heads of Moscow & Moscow Region Universities and State-owned Stock Company "All-Russian Exhibition Center", Inc. (V.V.C.)

Mikhail and Ilia Gotlibs demonstrate science projects at the SEED booth—one of the most popular at the exhibition

Alexei, our very active volunteer with a curious visitor
|
As in previous years, SEED participated—volunteers presented the SEED web site to young visitors and facilitated hands-on science experiments. We encouraged students to try some experiments and explained the physical basic laws that are behind of these experiments. Our guests were excited to discover our on-line Science Center—a resource which will be of great help for their further studies.
Schlumberger specialists attending the exhibition found a lot of interesting projects by students from all over Russia. Some inventions are intended for social and physical rehabilitation: anti-stammering and anti-stooping back devices, speech therapist software and many other things. And they were surprised to see how many young people were dressed in SEED t-shirts—provided this year to young volunteers from Moscow Universities who facilitated the organization of NTTM at V.V.C.
These annual exhibitions provide an outstanding opportunity for young people to share their ideas, get opinion about their projects from experts of the Science Committee and communicate with young scientists from other towns of Russia. All these are a powerful source of inspiration for further technical creativity.

Julia Stepanova presents the SEED site |
Participation of SEED Schlumberger in such events is evidence of our commitment to contribute to the development of communities where we live and work. Additionally, it gave us the opportunity to meet our friends from last year's exhibition and make new interesting contacts. It was a pleasure to meet visiting representatives from the SEED-connected Tomilino orphanage and a team from Moscow School 606, which recently received a SEED Connectivity grant. School 606 students presented the amateur radio station and its companion web site created.
This year, again, we had valuable support from children of our employees. They enjoyed their involvement with the exhibition and the responsibility of presenting SEED to the visitors. They were proud that their parents work for a company that cares about schoolchildren, and contributes to the educational development in such an enthusiastic way!
On the last day of NTTM a Diploma for Assistance in NTTM-2004 Organization signed by Mr. Luzhkov, the Mayor of Moscow was given to Schlumberger.
Thanks to all of the employee and family volunteers: Maria Verkholetova, Maxim Panfilov, Anton Maximenko, Larisa Pastor, Mikhail Gotlib, Nadezhda Ermolaeva, Maria Novichkova, Julia Stepanova, Ilia Matveev, Alexei Ignatov, Ilia Gotlib, Vlad Ermolaev, Julius Muraviev, Mikhail Novichkov.
