June 2008 [Tabasco, Mexico]
The state of Tabasco in southeastern Mexico celebrated the opening of a SEED lab at the Carmela Figueroa Burelo School in the town of Paraiso on June 17, 2008. It is the first Mexican SEED school inaugurated this year. Mexico has a total of 10 SEED schools located in Reynosa, Ciudad Mier, Coatzintla, Villahermosa, Ciudad del Carmen Paraiso and Mexico City.
SEED Mexico provided a connectivity grant that provides access to the Internet and outfitted a classroom with 20 high-performance computers and a printer. The lab makes available to over 500 students and their teachers a world of knowledge resources and activities, including the SEED website and the science education materials it offers.

The event was attended by a number of local officials, the principal and staff of the school and representatives of Schlumberger. George McCallum (OFS Manager, Mexico Marine), Karina Salazar (Local Program Coordinator and Volunteer) and Alejandra Barrera (SEED Coordinator MCA), represented Schlumberger and presided over the event. Each said a few words to the invited guests about SEED activities and goals and, of course, about the importance of science and technology education in today’s world. Also participating from Schlumberger were Alejandro Gaitan (Personnel Manager, Mexico Marine), Jorge Carrillo (IT) and the Community Welfare Group.
Hector Cruz, Principal of the Carmela Figueroa Burelo School, expressed his appreciation for the lab, saying, “We want to thank SEED for giving us this great opportunity! With this new lab our students will be learning with hands-on technology and will be able to have a more enjoyable learning experience together with their teachers and parents. This new lab allows us to be at the vanguard in education technology with tools that facilitate a better understanding of diverse disciplines.”

The school was colorfully decorated with signs and balloons in honor of the celebration. A group of students warmly welcomed guests as they entered the lab. The traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony was performed by George McCallum, principal Hector Cruz, and a city council representative, then everyone enjoyed delicious shrimp sandwiches that were prepared by mothers of the students.
Mexico has been an active SEED country for many years and hosted the first SEED collaborative workshop in 2003. Through SEED, Schlumberger provides meaningful educational opportunities that benefit its communities.
