Collaborative Workshop Port Harcourt, Nigeria Day 2

Day 2:

The day started bright and early for Tom and I (4:45am, 10:45pm to my Houston friends) as we headed out to the airport to catch a flight to Port Harcourt where the workshop will be held next week.

After we arrived at the airport, we found computer systems down, masses of people, and our two Schlumberger guides to be very helpful through it all.  After (what I could only describe as culture shock) we quickly boarded the plane, only to sit on it for an hour.  It was a quick flight to Port Harcourt once we got on our way.

After making it to the Port Harcourt Camp, we were given a tour and the standard Malaria talk that could save our lives.  After lunch Tom and I had a chance to visit the hotel where the workshop will take place next week. Tom and I quickly got to work trying to figure out the best arrangements for learning, and with the help of the hotel staff (which were great by the way!) we settled on what we hope is a promising plan.( I will add pictures when I have a stronger internet connection)

After getting back to camp from the hotel I finally got to meet Valerie! The country coordinator for Nigeria, and an essential part of the planning of this workshop.  We planned together for a few hours and then enjoyed a meal together.

Now we are watching the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in our house on the camp. I never thought I would have the chance to watch the opening ceremonies with an actual Olympian! It is awesome to see how excited Tom is for all things Olympics!

Anytime you travel international and especially in places like Nigeria, you learn to appreciate what we have in the US!  I can't remember the last time there was a computer outage at any Houston area airport...although maybe I just wasn't aware of the problem when it happened.  :-)

Take care and enjoy all the new sites, sounds and people of Nigeria.

I wish I could be a fly on the wall there... take care!
