2011 - Water Testing Workshop - Iquitos - August 8-9
Submitted by tsimien on 08/04/2011 - 17:30
From August 1 to 10, 2011 a group of students from the Energized for STEM Academy in Houston, TX visited the Amazon Basin in Peru. The students sponsored their trip by holding book drives in their own school district in order to share the gift of literacy with their peers in Iquitos, a community in the Peruvian Amazon. The travel was organized by Global Explorers, a non-profit organization that encourages educational travel, with scholarship support from the AFAR Foundation, the Pearson Foundation, Schlumberger and Mi-SWACO.
On August 8 & 9 the students visited with their peers from the Juan Bautista Mori Rosales SEED school in Iquitos. The collaborative activity between these two groups of students was about water quality testing. SEED provided Water Testing SEEDKITs to both group of students. The goal was to have small groups of students measure the quality of water of the Amazon river, and share their results with the other groups to interact and discuss environmental issues. Once back to Houston, the students will do the same measurements on their tap water, while the students in Iquitos will do the same in Peru and then share results and engage in discussions on planetseed.
Thank you to Carla Palacios and Manuel Antonio Paz Villarroel , Peru SEED Coordinators, and to Carla Vera, Mi-SWACO Mundo Integral Peru Coordinator, for organizing and facilitating the event.
