Science + Art = Magic (Part 1)

I am a musician. I play the harp.  I also once played the clarinet and the piano. I took dance lessons for 12 years (ballet, tap, and jazz).  And I love to draw and paint, but I'm not very good at it.  I love the arts and I love the intersection of science and art.  Without science, you wouldn't have art. And without art, science would be very lonely and boring.

Here are a few fascinating articles that I found that show the combination of science and art.

Word up on Translations

Chinese, Cake, Mandarin, Wedding, Love, translations, SEED, PlanetSEEDI'm not what people call "a language person". I speak English fluently because it's my mother tongue.  I had trouble learning Spanish in high school and college, but I know enough to get by when I travel to Mexico or other Spanish-speaking countries. I learned some Hebrew, too, but my memory only holds a few traces of the content I learned from 10 years of Hebrew school (purple, king, money, bird, and dog, and the numbers 1-10 are the only words I could recite to you now).

SEED, SmartWired, June Community Challenge, Get SmartWired, Online Training Module

Do you learn something new by reading about it? Or do you prefer to listen to instructions? Or maybe you take a hands-on approach? There are many ways to learn and each person has his or her own best learning style. Which approach is best for students in a SEED classroom? To find out, students at SEED schools get SmartWired.

Out of this World Strawberry Jam!

Jam, Jelly, Del Mar Fair, San Diego County Fair, Strawberry JamAs I've mentioned before, my father has a green thumb. We grew up with fresh fruit, vegetables, and flowers coming out of our ears. So what's the best thing to do with all of our peaches, oranges, blackberries, plums, grapefruits, etrogs, lemons, apricots, cherries, apples, pomegranates, grapes, and peppers?  Make jam, of course!

SEED books in braille?

To all our dear SEED friends and stakeholders,

We need your opinion! Since SEED was born 15 years ago, we have been touched and inspired by the work some of our schools have been doing for individuals with special needs. This includes visually impaired learners. What more could SEED do within its means to accommodate their needs?

Have you ever been... skydiving?

Skydive, 1998, SEED, PlanetSEED, airplane, Fun, Have you ever

Have you ever been skydiving?

Neither have I!

For those who have read the other blogs in my adventure series (Have you ever been... bungee jumpinghang glidingin a hot air balloonon the flying trapeze, or on a BBQ donut?), you know that I would sooner jump off a bridge with a cable tied to my back than set foot in a small airplane. So skydiving is not an option for me.

An Ode to PlanetSEED

An Ode to PlanetSEED
by Chris Jones, SEED Translations Coordinator

I wrote this ode to PlanetSEEDSEED, PlanetSEED, Poem, Ode
Not out of silly fright or need
But merely to express my humble opinion
That PlanetSEED is my favorite dominion

If chasing science you have the time
Then log on soon – you’ll feel sublime
We teach, we challenge, there’s even fusion
So you can draw your own conclusions

Our knowledge online will make you bright
With articles that bring intelligence to light
The math puzzles within hold many a riddle
And make your synapses fit as a fiddle

Our earth surely holds an abundance of topics
Through ice capped mountains to dense steamy tropics
The resources range from oceans to air
And a need for us all to take better care

Dabbling with Soy

One of my new year's resolutions for 2013 was to eat healthier.  Most people who know me are aware that I am already a healthy eater and I live a healthy lifestyle.  I walk my neighborhood as much as possible.  I sleep well.  I exercise my mind and my body.  I enjoy the company of friends. Though I am not a vegetarian, I tend to eat many of the same foods because they taste good and because they are healthy for my body. But there is always room to grow.
