Science + Art = Magic (Part 1)

I am a musician. I play the harp.  I also once played the clarinet and the piano. I took dance lessons for 12 years (ballet, tap, and jazz).  And I love to draw and paint, but I'm not very good at it.  I love the arts and I love the intersection of science and art.  Without science, you wouldn't have art. And without art, science would be very lonely and boring.

Here are a few fascinating articles that I found that show the combination of science and art.

Word up on Translations

Chinese, Cake, Mandarin, Wedding, Love, translations, SEED, PlanetSEEDI'm not what people call "a language person". I speak English fluently because it's my mother tongue.  I had trouble learning Spanish in high school and college, but I know enough to get by when I travel to Mexico or other Spanish-speaking countries. I learned some Hebrew, too, but my memory only holds a few traces of the content I learned from 10 years of Hebrew school (purple, king, money, bird, and dog, and the numbers 1-10 are the only words I could recite to you now).

Out of this World Strawberry Jam!

Jam, Jelly, Del Mar Fair, San Diego County Fair, Strawberry JamAs I've mentioned before, my father has a green thumb. We grew up with fresh fruit, vegetables, and flowers coming out of our ears. So what's the best thing to do with all of our peaches, oranges, blackberries, plums, grapefruits, etrogs, lemons, apricots, cherries, apples, pomegranates, grapes, and peppers?  Make jam, of course!

Have you ever been... skydiving?

Have you ever been skydiving?

Neither have I!

For those who have read the other blogs in my adventure series (Have you ever been... bungee jumpinghang glidingin a hot air balloonon the flying trapeze, or on a BBQ donut?), you know that I would sooner jump off a bridge with a cable tied to my back than set foot in a small airplane. So skydiving is not an option for me.

Have you ever been... on a Barbecue Donut?

Barbecue donut, BBQ donut, San Diego, Salt Lick, BayLately I have been blogging about my more adventurous activities, like hang-gliding, bungee jumping, trapezing, and hot air ballooning.  This next one wasn't exactly death-defying, but it was different and exciting. So I thought it would fit the bill.

Have you ever been... in a hot air balloon?

Hot air balloon, ride, PlanetSEED, SEED, San DiegoThe first time I went in a hot air balloon was when I was 9 years old. The excursion was a gift from my father to my mother for her birthday. Our whole family got to go. It was an unforgettable experience!  The second time I went in a hot air balloon was in 1997, when I took a visiting college friend on a tour of my home town San Diego.  Again, it was totally unforgettable.

Have you ever been... bungee jumping?

Bungee, Bunjy, Jump, New ZealandMy hubby and I went to New Zealand for our honeymoon in September 2004. It was idyllic -- calm, peaceful, beautiful scenery; beautiful beachers; a slower way of life; and bungee jumping...

Have you ever been... on the flying trapeze?

Circus, Flying trapeze, SEED, PlanetSEEDIs there anyone on this planet that doesn't want to join the circus, even for a day?  As a child, I loved going to the circus to see the clowns, the dancers, the animals, and especially the trapeze artists.  How graceful they were, swinging from bar to bar right above our heads! They reminded me of monkeys at the zoo. No wings or feathers, but still able to bound through the air for a few seconds of airborn freedom.

Have you ever been... hang gliding?

Hang glide, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, SEED, PlanetSEEDA few years ago I had the opportunity to visit Brazil for work.  Mostly I was in a small town called Sao Mateus in the state of Espirito Santo, but I had to fly in and out from Rio de Janeiro.  I stayed a few extra days on my own and my husband Matt met me there.  The beaches... Sugar Loaf... Corcovado... everything was stunning.  A highlight of our trip was a tandem hang glide over the beautiful coastline.

The Star of India

Star of India, San Diego, Maritime Museum, Ship, Historic, San Diego, California

The Star of India is the world's oldest active sailing ship, and it resides right here in my hometown of San Diego!  She is an iron ship that first set sail with the given name Euterpe (after the Greek muse of music and poetry) from Britain in 1863.  Her first two voyages were disasters...
