A Collaborative Workshop was hosted by the Children's Cancer Hospital in Cairo, Egypt March 21-25, 2010. Students and teachers from the hospital will attend along with Schlumberger volunteers and teachers from other SEED Schools in Egypt, and from the Library at Alexandria.

The newest SEED School in Egypt is the Cairo Children’s Cancer Hospital, an institution that provides comprehensive
care for children with cancer. There are thousands of children receiving outpatient treatment and about 150 at
any given time who need inpatient care. The Hospital’s approach is to deal with the whole child. So in addition to topnotch
medical care, there is counseling, physical therapy and education. Education is a challenge because the children may be at the hospital for weeks or months at a time, disrupting their normal schooling. Furthermore, their treatment makes it difficult to maintain a regular schedule. Teaching and learning necessarily become highly individualized.
 

The Hospital has a partnership with Modern Schools of Egypt (MSE), which provides five full-time teachers for the Hospital. In addition, there are university students who volunteer to work with the children on a one-to-one basis, teaching
them, playing with them, or just engaging in conversation. These teachers and volunteers, along with Schlumberger volunteers and teachersfrom other SEED schools and from MSE, participated in a Collaborative Workshop
at the Hospital from March 21-25. Six children also participated for short periods of time as their treatment schedules and conditions allowed. Because of the uncertainty inherent in the children’s schooling, we developed an approach that concentrated on SEEDKITs and Scratch. The goal was to provide teachers and volunteers with materials and strategies to work with students using relatively short activities on a flexible schedule.
