SEED Water Testing in Medias, Romania, Axente Sever High School

This last summer, I had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Elena Roman, an English Teacher at Axente Sever High School, 2 other teachers, and 5 students on the Water Testing Project. We tested the Tarnave River, which runs through town, in addition to the well at Mrs. Roman's home, and several local wells (Izvorul on the chart), and the school tap water. We found significant contamination of the river, including E. coli, but the well and fountain waters were safe (see the water quality indeces for comparison). The E. coli contamination was not surprising, given the number of farms in the area. Fields using manure as fertilizer border the river surrounding the town, and run-off from the roads in town lead to the river.
Our findings have stimulated discussion by the students into more causes and sources of river contaminants. Our goal is to present these findings to the local authorities and try to find a way to clean up the water. During the summer, it is not uncommon to find people fishing in the river, and educating the fishermen is essential.
