Is biogas a viable alternative energy source?
Biogas is produced from farmyard manure (animal dung). The manure can be processed to make gas, for the generation of electricity, and what's left over after the generation of energy can be used as fertilizer. But this requires animals and a continuous supply of animal dung, It may be tried also for human excreta ....

I think this would be a great question to pose to students. It will give them a real life topic that is a pressing issue. I am sure that students would have different insights into the pro's and con's of this technology. As an adult I know the limitations of an issue like this, but it would be interesting to see if they think the same problems would arise, or if they would come up with some we would never think of. Students could also do a cost analysis to compare this to fuel sources that are already present. On a large scale, is it feasible?
Other forms of biogas come from gases produced from landfills. The landfill near where I live produces enough energy each day to power 2,000 local homes. Here is a great sight to explain more about this. http://www.afdc.energy.gov/afdc/fuels/emerging_biogas.html
I would also like to know if they could find out more about uses in differnt countries, and the technology behind it.

This is true. In fact, many people don't know that one source of sustainable energy is animal waste: manure to energy, an energy converted from animal waste. This is a green idea, preferable to using coal, nuclear, or any foreign energy resources.
