What Was That Sound?

Did you hear a bird call you don’t recognize? A strange yowling outside your window at night that you know is not the neighborhood cat? Most of us think of the Internet as a source of information to read. But many animal Web sites have sound files to help you recognize the wildlife in your area. Here’s how I learned this trick.

If it seems to good to be true, it probably is

Good science starts with well-chosen questions, but if the answer you get doesn't square with your understanding of how things work, you need to find out why ... Here's a story from the BBC that certainly bears that out: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17139635

Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Maslenitsa... Which one is it?

I live in the South of USA where South traditions are preserved and observed with great care. Today is known as Fat Tuesday, and I have always known this day as the biggest celebration of Mardi Gras season in New Orleans with food, drinks, and carnival parties (same are organized in Galveston and other cities in Texas and Louisiana). In United States this holiday is celebrated with beads, Fleur-de-Lis symbols, masks, and purple, gold and green colors. This is what I thought Mardi Gras was all about.

Breakfast Time

When I looked out my kitchen window this morning, I noticed something dark brown and large sitting on the ground near my mailbox. It looked too large to be my neighbor's cat—maybe it was a turkey? I stepped out the door to try and take a closer look. I scared it off a little but it didn't go far, just to a tree across the street. It wasn't a turkey, but a turkey vulture. And when you see a turkey vulture, you are sure to see a dead animal. This large bird is fascinating in its own way.

Home Sweet Home - My Refuge

My refuge

I imagine a mass of heavy air
while I am at my refuge preparing for my next exploration
I try to capture it with my hands
it is full of those moments from the past
and I catch them and bring them with me now
while I prepare my expedition
dragging them into my present
and for a while I escaped from them and simply enjoy this instant, the present at my refuge
