Education is JOY
"Teaching and learning should bring joy. How powerful would that world be if we had kids who were not afraid to take risks. And who had a champion. Every child deserve a champion: an adult who would never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.” Rita F.Pierson
Art for art's sake - what you see is what you get
Over the course of my career, I have had a few people suggest that I go into teaching art, since that is my training and passion. Now, I am fairly confident I would make a very average teacher at best - I tend to think too much about what you "should" be telling kids. As luck would have it, I have nonetheless been called into service to help someone near and dear to me: my younger son.
It's never too late
Growing up I was always fascinated by Chemistry, but struggled with the subject all the time in school. I just didn't "get" it. Years later when I joined Dowell (eventually part of Schlumberger) I made fast friends with one of the chemists in the research laboratory. He is passionate and enthusiastic about the subject, and he has a great desire to help others see this. We spent numerous lunch breaks just talking about different problems and concepts. His gift of teaching led me to many "ah-ha!" moments, and I discovered that I could in fact learn a great deal - and enjoy it.
Candles and shadows
Hi, everyone!
The other day, I happened to observe a lighted candle that had a spotlight trained on it. When I looked at the shadow of the candle on the wall, it seemed to be the shadow of an unlit candle! The flame seemed to have no shadow at all! Here's a photo of what this looked like.
Working with Kids
I have been teaching children twice a week and have developed a supportive and caring relationship with them. This helps the children to build confidence in themselves as they grow toward a higher level of literacy.
Are You In or Out?
Hi everyone!
I'm a chemistry teacher as of this school year (2011-2012).
Previously, I taught elementary math for grades five & six and elementary algebra for two years; biology for 4 years; and physics for 1 year.
Probably, of all the subjects I have taught, chemistry is the most difficult and stressful.
But the tiredness I feel is compensated for when one activity seems very good for the students, as shown by their eagerness and joy in doing the activity.
